    1. Hii priya…

The original language of ‘Vande Mataram’ – the national song of India – was Sanskrit but was written in Bengali script, the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu clarified to the Madras High Court.Advocate General R. Muthukumaraswamy on Thursday submitted his clarification in response to a query raised by Justice M.V. Muralidharan about the original language of ‘Vande Mataram’, an ode to goddess Durga, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and later adopted as the national song of India.

The issue pertains to a plea moved by K. Veeramani, who failed to clear the written test for the post of BT Assistant, as he gave the answer that the song was written in Bengali.

According to the petitioner, he was awarded 89 marks in the test conducted for the post by the Teachers Recruitment Board. But the minimum eligibility mark was fixed as 90.

Subsequently, he found that he lost the one mark, as he gave the answer as Bengali.

He claimed that he had read in many books that the song was originally written in Bengali and that the TRB had made a mistake in the answer key.
